Former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen J.D. Vance (R-OH), may have had a falling out over statements the Ohio senator made regarding abortion. 

The former president has made it clear that he supports exceptions when it comes to abortion, even though the Democrats have continued to claim otherwise. 

Vance, while speaking to NBC’s Kristen Welker in August, revealed that former President Trump might veto a national abortion ban if it came to his desk as president. 

“I think he has been very clear he will not support that. He said that expressly,” Vance said. “If you are not supporting it as the president of the United States, you fundamentally have to veto it. I think he would. He said that expressly that he would.

However, during Tuesday’s debate, the former president declined to confirm if he would veto such a bill. When asked during the debate if he would veto the bill, Trump said he had not spoken to Vance about the issue. 

“I won’t have to,’ the former president responded. ‘I didn’t discuss it with J.D. in all fairness. J.D. – and I don’t mind if he has a certain view – but I think he was speaking for me. But I really didn’t.”

Vance, on Sunday, walked back his August comments but maintained that he and Trump are still against a national ban on abortion. Vance told Welker that he learned his lessons not to speak for the former president. 

‘I think that I’ve learned my lesson on speaking for the president before he and I have actually talked about an issue,’ Vance told Welker on Sunday morning. “What he has said at the debate, which is quite explicit, is he doesn’t support a national ban. He thinks it’s ridiculous to talk about vetoing a piece of legislation that isn’t going to come before the president in the first place.”

Vance insisted that his August comments were to make a point that Donald Trump does not support the idea of a national abortion ban.
