Shocking details emerged from a search warrant executed at the home of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. 

News of the couple’s death broke on Wednesday, with reports showing that Hackman and his wife were found at their luxurious Santa Fe mansion at 1:46 p.m. Mountain Time.  

Two maintenance workers, Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler, discovered the couple’s bodies before alerting authorities. 

Authorities withheld the identities of Hackman and Arakawa for nearly 12 hours, with new details about the scene potentially explaining the delay.  

According to the warrant executed at the couple’s home, police found their bodies partially mummified at the couple’s $3.3 million mansion, with pills strewn in their bathroom. Daily Mail reported that Arakawa, 64, was found decomposed with bloating on her face and mummification in her hands and feet.  Hackman was also found to have the same signs of decomposition as his wife.

Authorities found Arakawa’s body lying on her right side on the bathroom floor, with an open prescription pill bottle and scattered pills on a nearby countertop. Officials have not disclosed what the pills were or whether they were prescribed to Hackman or Arakawa.

The warrant revealed that Hackman’s body was found in a mud room off the couple’s kitchen. Police first spotted his legs on the ground in what appeared to be a mud room. The legendary actor’s sunglasses and walking cane were found next to his body, suggesting he may have died of a sudden fall.

Authorities initially stated that there was no foul play in connection to the couple’s death. However, a detective noted in the search warrant that the nature of the deaths was suspicious enough to warrant a thorough investigation.

Hackman’s daughter said she suspected the couple died of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning. The warrant, however, showed that fire department officials who responded to the couple’s home found no evidence of poisoning.

The door to the couple’s home was found open with no signs of forced entry. 

One of the couple’s three dogs was found dead in a closet, standing a few feet from Betsy’s body.

Hackman, who turned 95 in January, won two Oscars and was nominated for the prestigious award five times. He retired in 20004 and moved to New Mexico with his wife shortly after retiring.
