‘Trumpugees’ Flee America, Face Rude Awakening Abroad

A wave of Americans, dubbed “Trumpugees,” are fleeing the U.S. for liberal European havens, driven by fears of President Trump’s policies. But as they chase liberal dreams, many are realizing things are not always as they seem.

Summary

  • Progressive Americans are leaving the U.S. in response to Trump’s hardline policies.
  • Popular destinations include Spain, Portugal, and Canada, seen as liberal refuges.
  • Relocators face unexpected challenges like high taxes and cultural differences.
  • Many regret their decision, finding life abroad less idyllic than expected.
  • Experts warn of a “rude awakening” for those unprepared for the realities of expatriation.

The Great Escape

Several woke liberals who feared President Trump’s re-election and policies fled the country after the president’s November victory. Those who fled are now finding out that the grass isn’t always greener, and many are learning this the hard way.

The ‘Trumpugee’ Surge

Since January 2025, relocation inquiries have spiked, with companies like GTFO Tours reporting unprecedented interest.

“I think a lot of Americans have sort of been waiting to see how things are going, but they just keep getting worse,” said Bethany Quinn, a relocation coach and co-founder of GTFO Tours.

Spain, Portugal, and Canada top the list of destinations, promising liberal values and safety. Yet, the reality of expatriation often clashes with these idealized visions.

Harsh Realities Abroad

Newcomers are blindsided by challenges like complex visa processes, high tax rates, and cultural differences. In Spain, for instance, bureaucracy can be a nightmare, and taxes often exceed U.S. rates.

One expat, Sarah Jenkins, shared her disillusionment: “I thought moving to Portugal would be this progressive dream, but the cost of living and red tape are overwhelming.”

Others struggle with language barriers and social integration, finding that local communities aren’t always as welcoming as advertised.

“They’re about to massively regret it,” warned a relocation expert, noting that many fail to research the practicalities of life abroad.

A Conservative Perspective

For conservatives, this exodus highlights the folly of chasing ideological utopias. The “Trumpugees” often overlook the strength of American freedoms and economic opportunities, even under policies they oppose. Instead of engaging in the democratic process at home, they flee—only to face new struggles in unfamiliar lands.

As one observer noted, “America’s challenges are real, but running away doesn’t solve them. You trade one set of problems for another.”

The regret felt by many underscores the value of resilience and staying to shape the nation’s future.
