Indiana National Guard Shoots Migrant At Southern Border
An Indiana National Guard soldier, deployed to the nation’s border in Texas as part of Operation Lone Star, shot a migrant who had stabbed two people. After the shooting, the suspect fled back to Mexico.
The incident happened along the edge of the Rio Grande on Sunday afternoon in El Paso’s Lower Valley. It’s not clear if the bullet struck the suspect.
Meanwhile, an El Paso Fire and Rescue crew responded shortly after and treated the migrants for injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.
The Indiana National Guard revealed it was aware of the incident but released no further information.
“The Indiana National Guard is aware of the incident that happened Sunday, April 14,” the statement reads.. “We support and care for our soldiers and airmen supporting Operation Lone Star.”
Following the incident, the Texas Military Department released a statement stating that the incident was under investigation.
“Early on the afternoon of 14 April, a National Guard Service member assigned to Operation Lone Star discharged a weapon in a border-related incident. The incident is under investigation. More information will be made available as the investigation progresses,” the statement reads.
According to reports, Operation Lone Star is an ongoing border security mission headed by Texas. Soldiers from several states are deployed to the Texas border in support of the Lone Star State’s effort to bring down illegal border crossings.
In March, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced that Fifty Indiana soldiers were sent to spend ten months supporting the Texas National Guard at the southern border.
“Federal negligence enforcing immigration law and the failure to secure our country’s border jeopardizes national and economic security, affecting every state, including Indiana,” Holcomb said.
This incident comes a month after members of the Texas National Guard were punched and stomped on by hundreds of migrants who forced their way past them.
Reports claim that the migrants were trying to surrender to the U.S. Border Patrol. However, the Texas National Guard fenced the area to prevent migrants from doing so.
