Elon Musk Battles Dictator Judge
Elon Musk, one of the richest men on earth and X owner, is set to face a huge fight as Brazil’s highest judge turned on the multi-billionaire investor.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes included Musk as a target in an ongoing investigation for refusing to restrict accounts on the platform that disseminate fake news.
In addition, de Moraes has now opened a separate probe into Musk for what he claims is a disinformation campaign against Brazil’s court system.
In his decision, de Moraes noted that Musk began waging a public disinformation campaign regarding the top court’s actions.
“The flagrant conduct of obstruction of Brazilian justice, incitement of crime, the public threat of disobedience of court orders, and future lack of cooperation from the platform are facts that disrespect the sovereignty of Brazil.” de Moraes said.
Recently, Musk took to X to accuse de Moraes of suppressing free speech and violating Brazil’s constitution. In his tweet, he noted that users could seek to bypass any shutdown of the social media platform by using VPNs or virtual private networks.
According to a local news outlet, Musk claimed in a post on X on Sunday that de Moraes had betrayed the constitution and people of Brazil and he should resign or be impeached.
Before this, Musk revealed in a Saturday post on X that the platform would lift all restrictions and that the judge threatened to arrest X employees with massive fines and cut off access to X in Brazil.
In that case, the company will lose all revenue in Brazil and have to shut down its office there. He later instructed users in Brazil to download a VPN to retain access if X was shut down.
The CEO also wrote that X would publish all de Mores’ demands, claiming they violate Brazilian law.
According to the outlet, de Moraes said Musk would face a fine of $20,000 every time an account is reactivated on X.
Jorge Messias, Brazil’s attorney general, wrote on Saturday night that Brazil needs to regulate social media platforms.
“We cannot live in a society in which billionaires domiciled abroad have control of social networks and put themselves in a position to violate the rule of law,” he wrote. “Failing to comply with court orders and threatening our authorities. Social peace is non-negotiable.
