Sanctuary cities like Los Angeles have drawn sharp criticism for policies that obstruct federal immigration enforcement, creating safe havens for illegal immigrants. Legal analyst Gregg Jarrett, speaking on Fox Business’s “The Evening Edit,” outlined a clear strategy to address this defiance. 

“It’s a crime to impede or interfere with ICE. It’s a separate felony to harbor or shield people here illegally. So I was glad to see the DOJ finally, belatedly, sue Los Angeles for obstruction,” Jarrett said. “The remedy here is an injunction, but, most importantly, a loss of tens of millions of dollars in federal funds. Maybe that will get their attention.” 

He praised the Department of Justice’s recent lawsuits against cities like Los Angeles, which refuse to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Jarrett’s primary solution is to hit these jurisdictions where it hurts: their budgets. 

“Withhold tens of millions in federal funds,” he urged, arguing that financial penalties would force compliance.

Enforcing Federal Law Through Injunctions

Jarrett emphasized the need for swift legal action to curb sanctuary city policies. He advocated for federal courts to issue injunctions compelling local governments to adhere to immigration laws. 

“The DOJ is finally, belatedly, suing Los Angeles for obstruction,” Jarrett noted, signaling a shift toward aggressive enforcement. These lawsuits aim to dismantle local ordinances that prevent police from cooperating with ICE, ensuring that federal authority is respected. 

Jarrett’s approach hinges on the principle that no city should be above the law, particularly when their actions endanger American citizens.

Addressing Violence and Chaos

The urgency of Jarrett’s proposals is underscored by a 700% surge in assaults on ICE officers in 2025, with 79 incidents reported from January 21 to June 30, compared to just 10 the previous year, according to the Department of Homeland Security. 

Jarrett condemned local leaders like Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, accusing them of siding with “chaos and lawlessness” over public safety. He also criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom’s failed attempt to block National Guard deployments ordered by President Donald Trump to secure the border. 

“These sanctuary jurisdictions are violating federal law,” Jarrett said, calling for decisive measures to restore order.
