President Joe Biden finally succumbed to the growing pressure from his part on Sunday when he announced he would drop out of the 2024 presidential race. 

The president made the shocking announcement in a statement on his X page. 

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden’s statement reads. “And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Biden’s statement comes after weeks of growing pressure within his own party. Heavyweight Democrats and donors, such as Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Hollywood star George Clooney, have all called on the president to Drop out of the race. 

Moments after his statement, Biden made another shocking revelation that could cause a major division in the party. The president announced his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democrat nominee. 

“I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in an X post addressed to Democrats.” My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.”

Reports in The New York Times revealed that Biden’s campaign has already officially filed a change of name paperwork with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). The campaign changed the name from “Biden for President” to “Harris for President.”

Despite Biden’s endorsement, reports suggest that not all Democrats support Harris as the Democrat’s nominee. Prior to Biden’s announcement, Democrat squad member Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) revealed that her colleagues also want Harris gone. 

“If you think that there is consensus among the people who want Joe Biden to leave, that they will support Kamala – Vice President Harris – you would be mistaken… I’m gonna be honest for them,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I’m in these rooms. I see what they say in conversations. A lot of them are not just interested in removing the president. They are interested in removing the whole ticket.”

Democrats such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer  (D), Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Indiana Gov. Andy Beshear, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg are in the running to be either Harris’ challenger or running mate.
