Celebrities Lead Tribute As Fashion Icon Dies
English fashion designer Victoria Beckham and designer Giorgio Armani have led tributes for Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli.
Cavalli, whose death was announced by his company on Friday, died at age 83.
“It is with deep regret and great sadness that Roberto Cavalli Maison participates in the passing of its founder, Roberto Cavalli,” the company said. “From humble beginnings in Florence, Mr. Cavalli succeeded in becoming a globally recognized name loved and respected by all.”
Sharing a tribute on her Instagram stories, Beckham posted a photo of herself holding hands with Cavalli while he raised his hand and made the peace sign.
“So sorry to hear the sad news of Roberto’s passing. He’ll forever be an icon,”Beckham wrote.
Armani, who described Cavalli as a true artist, took to X to share his heartfelt condolences.
“I cannot imagine a vision of fashion more distant from mine than that of Roberto Cavalli, yet I have always had enormous respect for him,” he wrote. “Roberto was a true artist, wild and wonderful in his use of prints, capable of transforming fantasy into seductive clothes. I have learned with great sadness of his passing: his Tuscan verve will be greatly missed.”
Tributes from other celebrities also came in for the late designer.
“Roberto Cavalli was always one of my favorite designers. A true artist in every sense of the word,” American singer and actress Jennifer Hudson wrote on X. “He made the world more beautiful and will be dearly missed. May he rest in peace!”
Reacting to the news of Cavalli’s demise, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk described the designer as a lover of animal prints and fur.
“’Roberto Cavalli said of his fascination with animal prints and fur: “I love nature. Animals have the best dresses. God made them so well-dressed,” Newkirk wrote on X. “’ Before he passed, his namesake brand finally embraced luxurious faux fur, proving that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. We hope that his admirers- and anyone who cares about wildlife will choose to do the same.
Cavalli, known for his signature animal prints, launched his label in 1970. According to a recognized news outlet, Cavalli showcased for the first time in his debut collection in Paris, which featured a pink leather evening gown.
He is survived by his six children and his partner, Sandra Bergman Nilsson.
