LA Times Mistakenly Refers To OJ Simpson As Trump
The Los Angeles Times on Thursday incorrectly referred to O.J. Simpson as former President Donald Trump in the newspaper’s obituary for the former football player acquitted of murder.
In describing Simpson’s early release from a Nevada prison for a 33-year sentence for armed robbery and kidnapping, the paper named Trump as the released convict.
“Long before the city woke up on a fall morning in 2017, Trump walked out of Lovelock Correctional Center outside Reno, a free man for the first time in nine years,” the paper wrote, mistaking the former president for the ex-NFL player. “He didn’t go far, moving into a 5,000-square-foot home in Vegas, with a Bentley in the driveway.”
An updated version of the obituary corrected the error, including a note stating that the earlier version of the obituary used the wrong name when describing Simpson leaving Lovelock Correctional Center.
Katy Grimes, editor-in-chief of the California Globe, argued that media members are just itching to write stories about Trump being found guilty and going to prison.
“LA Times typo in OJ’s obit: according to L.A. Times writer Elaine Woo, O.J. Simpson was arrested for robbery, but it was Donald Trump who served time for nine years,” Grimes wrote.
Simpson served time at Lovelock in connection to a 2007 robbery in which he and a group of armed men broke into a hotel room at Las Vegas’ Palace Station Hotel Casino.
Simpson and his gang confronted a pair of sports memorabilia dealers, claiming they had his stolen memorabilia.
According to reports, Simpson was acquitted of the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in 1995.
The pair were stabbed to death outside of Brown Simpson’s condo in 1994, which set off a televised police chase and ensuing trial.
He was later found liable in a civil suit and ordered to pay the families $33.5 million in damages. The ex-nfl player passed away on Wednesday at the age of 76 after a battle with prostate cancer.
