Murder Suspect Sets Himself ABLAZE
A 59-year-old man is in custody after he fatally stabbed a woman and then set himself on fire during his arrest.
According to Fox 2 News, Wyandotte officers received a call from co-workers who reported that they hadn’t seen the victim, Pak-Kim, a 55-year-old woman, at work in a few days.
When officers showed up at the victim’s apartment, they found her dead inside. According to the outlet, the suspect, identified as Sung-Ho Jin, is accused of murdering the victim and fleeing to Ohio in her vehicle.
According to CBS News, the vehicle and suspect entered the Law Enforcement Information Network. Late Sunday and Monday morning, Akron and Ohio officers received alerts from the department’s Flock license plate reader that matched the suspect vehicle.
Upon sighting the officer, the suspect fled in a vehicle. He later stopped the vehicle, got out and brandished a knife before reentering the car. While inside the vehicle, the suspect intentionally set himself on fire inside it. While ablaze, he jumped out of the vehicle again, and the flames were extinguished.
According to the police, Jin was taken to an Ohio hospital, where he is in police custody. He is still in critical condition and is being treated for second-degree and possibly third-degree burns.
A spokesperson for the Wyandotte police department noted that the police detectives are preparing the necessary reports and investigation material to forward to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review and issuing of charges.
Fox 2 News also reports that Jin stabbed the victim after he made numerous advances toward her after her husband died last fall.
In an interview, the victim’s friend, Angela Hasse, said that Jin’s advances became increasingly aggressive each time Pak-Kim rejected him.
“He’s psychotic, and he needs help. There’s something wrong with him,” Hasse said. “She’s an amazing person. She would take care of her workers and give them a place to live if they didn’t have a place to live. She was just that kind of person, had that heart.?”
According to reports, the suspect had given Jin a car and a room in her multi-family home. However, the motive for Pak-Kim’s murder is currently unknown.
