AOC fired back, writing, “I’m proud of how I grew up and talk about it all the time! My mom cleaned houses and I helped. We cleaned tutors’ homes in exchange for SAT prep. Growing up between the Bronx and Yorktown deeply shaped my views of inequality & it’s a big reason I believe the things I do today!”

Conservatives argue AOC’s defense sidesteps the core issue: her family moved to Yorktown Heights when she was five, raising questions about her claim to a hardscrabble Bronx identity. 

Slater told Fox News Digital, “When I saw the tweet making her out to be this tough Bronx girl, I’d just had enough.” 

He called her “Bronx mythology” laughable, noting that Yorktown, a prosperous suburb, contrasts sharply with the urban struggles AOC often invokes. Her 2018 campaign leaned heavily on her Bronx roots, including a viral ad touting her working-class upbringing, which critics say misleads voters.

AOC’s response emphasizes how her dual upbringing informs her progressive policies.
